Handloom sector declines : Study highlights facts , figures and reasons

Once a flourishing sector , the handloom industry of Bangladesh has apparently fallen on hard times !
As per study conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies ( BIDS ), the handloom units in the country have registered a sharp fall lately , from one lakh in 2003 to just 45,000 in 2017 .
Rapid and continuous growth of powerlooms and dyeing factories coupled with changing dressing habits and fashion of the womenfolk , have all led to the fall of the handloom industry , as per the study .
The principal objective of the BIDS study – based on secondary
materials drawn from desk review of available published
and unpublished documents and primary information gathered
from field visits , important handloom areas and also some selective areas producing artistically-designed delicate fabrics – was to look into the existing status of the country ’ s handloom industry in reference to the past , thereby formulating a hypothesis on the future standing .
Some 1,65,000 handlooms were in operation in the country in 1990 , the study underlined adding that the rate of decline in the establishments and employment during 1990-2003 was estimated at 3.8 per cent and 1.31 per cent respectively while the corresponding rate was estimated at 5.0 per cent and 6.80 per cent for the period 2003-2013 .
