Are there any new/non-traditional market(s) that you are catering to and what is your opinion on its/their potential(s)? Please share your views… Roshan Withanage, Managing Director, CJ International Ltd. Md. Kabir Hossain, Managing Director, Sourcing Bangladesh Ltd. I think there are great potentials in new markets as the world changes and the developing nations increase their consumption. So sticking to traditional export markets, such as North America and Central Europe, is becoming less rewarding. According to me, one who ventures into South America, East Europe, etc., will get more opportunities to grow. We ourselves have acquired new clients in Poland and Slovenia within the last six months. The Scandinavian market, especially Sweden, accounts for a major chunk of my business. Though it is not very big in terms of volume, the best part is when buyers’ world over (especially from the US and Europe) are decreasing the price margins significantly, Swedish buyers are very reasonable in terms of price… Syed Nurul Islam, CEO, Well Group Rafiqul Haq Parosh, Managing Director, Versatile Apparel Pvt. Ltd. I would say that among the non-traditional markets, South America could be the most potential destination for Bangladesh apparel industry. We’ve already started shipments to Brazil, while other countries, including Peru, Argentina and Bolivia are in the offing. Apart from South America, I consider China as the second most potential market from Bangladesh’s perspective. We have very good chances to benefit from the Chinese market if we can grab the opportunities that are around. Besides, Russia is also an ideal market for us and several Bangladeshi exporters have already commenced shipments to Russia. Bangladesh industry should explore the more potential markets to sustain in this competitive world otherwise it would be very difficult to retain the market position. Japan, which is a non-traditional market for Bangladesh has very good potential in my view… You will find a large number of Japanese buyers in Bangladesh these days; even Uniqlo has its own office in Dhaka. Japan for that matter is buying apparel worth almost US $ 1 billion from Bangladesh currently; and especially for knits and denims, the prospects are very positive. M. Neaz A Bhuiyan, Director, Chittagong Fashion Group We have started working for clients from India since the last few years… The order volume from Arvind alone is around 1,00,000 pieces yearly. We are also working for the Russian market for more than 10 years now; currently we are doing women’s dress for brand Outventure.
