FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ’ s DESK …
From compliance to ethical sourcing …, the journey so far has been full of challenges and conflicts . The players and stakeholders of the garment value chain , have struggled not only to come to terms with the realities of global business but also to follow the path , which is best for all .
The goal , as defined by the groups that are overseeing the change , sometimes seems too big to achieve in a short period of time . The degree of difficulty is even higher considering the fact that everyone wants to work towards ethical sourcing , but not everyone wants to bear the cost !
The dilemma of every business is the same – how to balance social and environment commitments of the future with profitability and sustenance today .
Which brings us back to the three intertwined circles of true sustainability – social , environment and economic . Unless an initiative or movement meets all the three goals , long-term sustainability is not possible .
Yet , demands for social sustainability and to a certain degree environment sustainability are now becoming a norm … almost like quality and timely delivery , which are non-negotiable .
So , the only factor that remains negotiable and , in all honesty , is the biggest deciding factor when placing an order is the ‘ price ’… the nature of the RMG sector is such that it always chases the lowest cost destination !
However , there is an urgent need to relook at this matrix . On one end , the buyers want an ethical supply chain , where every worker is given their due and the production process is environment-friendly , and on the other end , they still want to place orders with the factory that offers the best price !
The Bangladeshi entrepreneur is among the most proactive in the global garment industry … He is always willing to invest in his factory and on his people to stay in step with the expectations of the global business .
But , is he getting anything in return … tangible or intangible ? This is a debate that has been raging for long and will continue to dominate discussions and platforms around the world for many more years .
Every stakeholder has his / her own take on the debate and some buyers openly feel that since the industry has been exploiting workers for long , it is their duty to give a fair wage to these workers and this should not be the buyer ' s responsibility .
Encouragingly , there are some other buyers , who understand that changing overnight and adding additional cost in a highly competitive market can be suicidal for any organisation … These buyers are in their own way supporting their suppliers in this journey of change , not necessarily with better prices , but by improving efficiencies and managing business .
Whatever the scene , the pressure is on the factories and ethical sourcing is the direction . We can only hope that more and more buyers will stay loyal to the factories that strive to achieve this essential goal !
