J. Crew appoints new Creative Chief, expects turnaround

American multi-brand fashion retail group J. Crew has announced the appointment of its new Chief Design Officer, Johanna Uurasjarvi.
Uurasjarvi is a graduate of Helsinki Aalto University and
replaces Somsack Sikhounmuong at J. Crew, who resigned from his post in September 2017.
However, her real task is to replenish the efforts of Jenna Lyons who stepped down from her position of President and Creative
Director last year after a 28-year long stint with the brand.
The Finnish designer’ s portfolio of work boasts of most recently serving in the position of Creative Director at lifestyle and home goods brand – West Elm, where her driven efforts resulted in uplifting the revenues to US $ 1 billion mark.
The designer has also worked with Urban Outfitter-owned Anthropologie as its Executive Creative Director of Product Design, for almost 10 years.
Jim Brett, CEO, J. Crew Group, lauded the new hire’ s achievements adding,“ Johanna is a visionary with impeccable taste who will undoubtedly inspire our team, our partners and our customers.”
The gone year has not been great for the retailer as it continues to record negative results but the new talent acquisition is expected to help in its turnaround. The brand has said that September 2018 will see a brand relaunch and is expecting a consequential improvement in sales.
In addition to the creative efforts, J. Crew is also implementing cost-cuts, increasing its digital outreach as well as reorganising sourcing strategy by way of cost negotiations.
The retailer is also planning to launch a new sister concern,‘ Playa’ to tap into blooming segments like swim and youth apparel at affordable ranges.
