Minimum wage for the workers in Bangladesh’ s backward linkage of apparel industry, the textiles sector, has been recommended at Taka 5,710.
The board formed to formulate the fresh wage structure for the textile workers has made the recommendation, what has been published as a Government order recently. This is the final recommendation of the wage board formed by the Government.
Under the new wage structure, the textile workers of upazila-level will receive a monthly pay of Taka 5,710. Those working in district headquarters will receive a monthly wage of Taka 5,990, and finally, those in divisional headquarters will get Taka 7,170.
The last review of a minimum wage for textile workers was held back in 2011. Back then, the minimum wage was set at Taka 3,302 with Taka 2,150 as the basic pay, Taka 752

as house rent, medical expense of Taka 300, and travel allowance of Taka 100.
It is pertinent to add here that Bangladesh Government formed the wage board for textile workers back in April 2017. It was formed with workers’ representative Md Mostafa, Vice President of Dhaka Cotton Mills’ Workers Union, and Md Jamal Uddin, former Director

of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association( BTMA) and owner of Jamal Uddin Textile Pvt. Ltd., as the factory owners’ representative.
According to data available, nearly 6,00,000 workers are engaged with the textile sector of Bangladesh, which include those working in the Jamdani weaving, specialised textile mills, terry towels and home textiles sector.

Mansoor Ahmed, Secretary of BTMA, told Apparel Online that the new wage structure has been formulated in consultation with the BTMA.“ We have no objection about the new wage. But we have identified some anomalies with respect to the designation of the workers, which we have said needs adjustment,” he added.

After months of sluggish growth, Bangladesh’ s apparel exports have finally rebounded in the month of May – fetching over US $ 2.8 billion, thanks to demand for both knit and woven products.
According to the data released by Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau, the country’ s total apparel exports surpassed US $ 28.13 billion during the July- May 2018 period, marking an impressive 9.7 per cent gain on a year-to-year basis compared to last year.

July-May 2018’ s apparel export figures of US $ 28.13 per cent surpassed the strategic export target of US $ 27.24 billion by over 3.2 per cent. During the same period last year, the figures were US $ 25.62 billion, according to the stats.
Collectively, the total exports of US $ 3.32 billion fell short of the strategic target of US $ 3.38 billion by 1.7 per cent. But, on a year-to-year basis, it was over 9 per cent gain.
