Pakistan grows 20.50 per cent in denim apparel exports to the US

Pakistan, one of the promising denim suppliers to the world, escalated its denim apparel exports to the USA during January to May 2018 period.
According to the latest figures released by OTEXA and analysed by Apparel Online, Pakistan grew 20.50 per cent on the yearly note and exported denim apparels worth US $ 86.25 million to the USA market, adding another US $ 15.51 million in May from what the country had already earned till April month.
It is to be noted that denim apparels here consist of jeans of both Mens & Boys( MB) and Women’ s & Girls( WG) categories; skirts and jackets.
While Mens and Boys( MB) denim jeans fetched US $ 33.08 million( up 8.38 per cent) for Pakistan through exports to the USA, Women’ s and Girls( WG) segment remained a robust product category in which Pakistan posted a commendable growth of 29.10 per cent to clock US $ 52.13 million in the mentioned period.
On the other hand, exports of skirts and jackets in the US market got a boost of 83.45 per cent and 89.34 per cent, respectively though the export value was not something to cheer upon. Skirts earned US $ 0.403 million for Pakistan, while jackets valued at US $ 0.465 million.
Notably, during the period, Pakistan surpassed Mexico in denim jackets exports. Mexico fell drastically by 61.78 per cent and exported jackets worth just US $ 0.276 million to the USA and probably this shift was captured by Pakistan.
The overall denim apparel import by the US was US $ 1,283.11 million during the review period and Pakistan had just 6.72 per cent share in this import value. The figure also indicates that the denim apparel import by the country is surely increasing; however, Pakistan has a long way to go in order to increase its valuewise share in the US market.

Africa banks on rising FDI; posts solid growth in apparel exports to the US

African countries posted a solid growth in apparel exports to the USA during the first five months of 2018, thanks to the FDI they attracted in the recent times. Kenya remained the largest exporter from the continent followed by Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.
Kenya exported apparels in the USA market worth US $ 147.78 million in the said period experiencing 11.57 per cent growth on the yearly note.
The next in line was Lesotho which has always been underrated when it comes to apparel export market. However, the African country noted a decent growth of 9.27 per cent to ship US $ 115.51 million worth of apparels to the US market. Madagascar too showed impressive
growth of 28.16 per cent on Y-o-Y basis and apparel exports to the US valued at US $ 75.83 million during the review period.
Mauritius and Morocco were also up by 5.64 per cent and 9.96 per
cent in their respective exports which clocked US $ 58.13 million and US $ 60.52 million, respectively.
Further, Ethiopia, a country which is making headlines for all good reasons, got a massive boost
( 106.55 %) in its exports to the USA. During the review period, the country exported US $ 38.90 million worth of apparels to its largest market.
It’ s worth noting here that Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar and Mauritius have been leading exporters under AGOA accounting for approximately 86 per cent of the total apparel exports till May this year.
One of the major reasons for the booming garment exports from the African nations in the US market is investment by giant Bangladeshi garment groups to avail the duty privilege under the AGOA under which the African countries enjoy duty-free and quota-free access for certain goods, including garments, to the US.
