Tepid Indian apparel
exports: CMAI
An update by the Clothing Manufacturers
Association of India (CMAI) revealed that India
exported US$1.36 bn worth of apparel in July,
which was 7% more than July 2018 and 11%
more than June 2019. However, as per the
provisional data for August 2019, there seems to
be a renewed decline of 2% on a year-on-year
basis, and 8% on a month-on-month basis.
The findings also suggested that from April
to July, almost all Indian fashion brands and
apparel manufacturers reported an increase in
their revenues. Having accounted for sales worth
US$1.47 billion, the US is by far the largest
export market for Indian apparel during this
period. Exports to Saudi Arabia and Japan also
rose by 59% and 8% respectively; while those to
the UK and Germany declined by 2% and
11% respectively.

At the beginning of 2019, global sportswear
major Nike launched its new yoga collection.
The collection featured both menswear and
womenswear and included a mix of workout
pants, tops underwear and sweatshirts. To
coincide with this new development, Nike rolled
out a new app, ‘Enhance Your Training with
Yoga’, for its users which provided a selection of
workouts to meet their yoga goals. Major yoga
wear players in the market include Lululemon
Athletica, Under Armour, Manduka, Amer
Sports, ASICS America Corporation, Columbia
Sportswear, Hanesbrands, Hugger Mugger, La
Vie Boheme Yoga and YogaDirect among others.
According to a report by Technavio Research,
in the past decade, yoga has gained significant
popularity globally, especially in North America,
as a form of fitness activity. The popularity of
yoga is continuously increasing, especially in the
US and Canada. People are opting for yoga and
meditation due to multiple reasons, including
stress relief, increased flexibility, general fitness,
and overall health development.
This increasing awareness has influenced the
sales of yoga apparel, yoga equipment, and
accessories worldwide.

Maison Karl Lagerfeld is coming to India in
collaboration with Cover Story. A limited-edition
collection is being sold in select Future Group
stores in cities such as Ahmedabad, Pune, and
Hyderabad. The idea is to introduce the best of
international fashion to India, which is tailored
for the Indian customer, whether it is in shape,
colour or even fabrics.
The collaboration has been in the works for
the past year. The idea is that even someone in
Pune or Ahmedabad should be able to access
global fashion without actually having to travel
to London to buy a Karl Lagerfeld. This, in fact,
is said to be the last collection that designer
Karl Lagerfeld himself supervised before he
passed away.
