total exports earnings. Not just that, the sector
is also currently one of the largest sources of job
creation in the country, with a reach of about
45 million people employed directly.
Echoing the thoughts of Irani, Arvind
Panagariya, eminent economist who served
as the first Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog from
January 2015 to August 2017, said in an earlier
interaction, “India must focus on the growth of
labour-intensive sectors to create decent jobs for
the masses.” Panagariya highlighted the priority
areas with a clear focus on the growth of labour-
intensive sectors including apparel, among many
others, to create jobs for the masses.
In a report published in The Tribune, Nidhi
Trehan, Additional Director of Quality and
Standards, Apparel Made-ups and Home
Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC),
speaks about the importance of the right
workforce skills in the industry. She says,
“Apparel, Made-ups and Home Furnishing
Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC), under the
umbrella of the Ministry of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship, has been a major instrument in
imparting skills in various spheres of the sector.
