How significant is Latin America for Maersk?
Latin America is a strategic area for Maersk, and we have headquarters
in four key clusters in the region – Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Panama,
the latter being our main Latin American base. The vast opportunity
comes from the availability of raw materials, a growing middle class,
and untapped potential for industrialization and exportation. Peru
has shown significant growth in recent years due to its thriving mining
sector, Bolivia has been growing for over a decade, and Chile has seen
steady growth for many years now.

Can you provide a brief overview of Maersk and its work in the
chemical industry?
Maersk Line is the largest shipping company in the world, with over
630 vessels and over 300 offices, where we reach 343 ports in 114
countries. We ship over 12 million containers per year, and have
33,000 employees. Maersk combines a global network with extensive
expertise, offering a range of logistical services, both inland and for
ocean shipping, which is our core business. In the chemical industry
Maersk is focused on projects for the transportation of special cargo
on our container ships.
What has been the most notable change in the structure of the
shipping industry in recent years?
There has been systemic consolidation in the shipping industry for
the last 20 years. The first wave of consolidation came from 1996 to
2000, as mergers and acquisitions between CMA, CGM, ANL, P&O,
Nedlloyd, Maersk, Safmarine, NOL, APL and SeaLand, all contributed
to a rise in market share for the top five companies from 27% to 31%.
The second wave took place from 2005 to 2008, where the top-five
market share grew from 36% to 43%, due to agreements between
Hapag-Lloyd, CPShips, Hamburg Süd, CCL, CMA CMG, Delmas, USL,
Maersk, and P&O Nedlloyd. The third and most recent wave started
in 2014, and is coming to the end in 2018. This has been the most
significant wave, as the market share for the top five grew from 45%
to 64%. This process involved mergers of Hapag-Lloyd with CSAV,
Hamburg Süd with CCNI, CMA CGM with OPDR and APL, China COSCO
Shipping with OOCL, NYK Line with Japan’s K-Line and MOL, and
finally Maersk acquired Hamburg Süd.
Global Business Reports
CPShips, Hamburg Süd, CCL, CMA CMG, Delmas, USL, Maersk, y P&O
Nedlloyd.

How is Maersk riding the wave of digitalization?
Maersk believes the industry has to be disrupted digitally. We
have introduced online bookings so our customers receive faster
confirmation, and online quoting so they do not have to wait to
see a sales executive. Maersk has also implemented improvements
such as Remote Container Management (RCM), which was rolled out
in 2017. RCM provides customers with real time insights into their
cargo’s location and condition (temperature, humidity, atmospheric
conditions) within refrigerated containers. All our 270,000 reefer
containers have been equipped with GPS-based RCM technology.
Can you tell us about the recent joint venture agreement
between Maersk and IBM?
Maersk has partnered with IBM to develop blockchain technology that
will improve global trade and digitize supply chains. The objective of
this partnership is to reduce the paper trail and enable customers to
do business with other countries faster and more securely. The current
documentation process for shipping products from one continent to
another can be very complicated. The solution, being developed in a
collaboration between IBM and Maersk, aims to simplify this process,
establishing a shared, immutable record of all the transactions that
take place within cloud networking and then enabling permissioned
parties access to trusted data in real time.
Esta so-
How does Maersk contribute to a more sustainable shipping
industry?
Maersk currently offers the lowest fuel emissions in the shipping
industry, with the aim to reduce our CO2 emissions by 60% by 2020. An
example of Maersk’s commitment to sustainability is the Triple E-class
container ship we have developed; with a length of 399.2 meters and
a load capacity of 20,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), it is the
largest container vessel of its kind. The Triple-E stands for Energy
efficient, Economy of scale, and Environmentally improved.•
