Enhanced performance – of turbines , engines , boat aerodynamics , fuel , among others – also results in increased sustainability , with lower fuel consumption , reduced levels of emissions , and higher safety records . Mauricio Elías of Maersk Line provided an overview of the Danish company ’ s efforts to ride the digital wave , including the option for customers to quote and book online ; the Remote Container Management System ( RCM ), rolled out in 2017 , that allows reefer customers to have real-time visibility of their cargo ’ s location and condition ( temperature , humidity , atmospheric conditions ); and the alliance with IBM to apply blockchain technology , with the aim of digitizing supply chains . “ The objective of this partnership is to reduce the paper trail and enable our customers to do business with other countries faster and more securely ,” explained Elías . “ The current documentation process for shipping products from one continent to another can be very complicated . The solution enables a shared , immutable record of all the transactions that take place within cloud networking and then enables permissioned parties access to trusted data in real time .” Cybersecurity will be a key aspect to consider in this new scenario . Indeed , last year Maersk suffered a cyber attack by the NonPetya ransomware , which basically brought its operations worldwide to a halt and caused substantial losses , estimated at between US $ 200 million and US $ 300 million for business interruption . Other companies like FedEx ’ TNT Express were also affected by a similar attack . While cyber attacks are a global problem , there are more localized threats depending on the region . Luckily , in Latin America terrorism is not an issue , but there are climatic events that can cause great disruption , namely hurricanes and fog . “ The industry needs to become more sophisticated to face these challenges ,” asserted Eduardo Praselj of ALV . With regard to sustainability , Elías of Maersk highlighted his company ’ s development of the Triple E-class container as a key milestone in the company ’ s evolution : “ With a length of 399.2 meters and a load capacity of 20,000 TEU ( twenty-foot equivalent units ), it is the largest container vessel of its kind . The Triple-E stands for Energy efficient , Economy of scale , and Environmentally improved ,” he said . Indeed , with the profitability of global trade always on the line , and with a greater political and social mandate for increased environmental care worldwide , sustainability will have to be a pillar for all companies involved in the whole value chain in the years to come . •
