Training Education for Advancement Dakota County Technical College programs designed for careers in the Health Industry Practical Nursing Practical Nursing Diploma (42 credits) Overview The program equips graduates with the knowledge and skill set to administer safe, ethical, patient-centered nursing care in traditional and alternative health care settings. The Practical Nurse (PN) role within the nursing process is taught through classroom learning, simulated client care, and instructor-supervised clinical experiences in health care settings. This program will be adopting the NLN Educational Competencies Model. The program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the licensing examination administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Medical Assistant Nursing Assistant Medical Assistant A.A.S. Degree (60 credits) Medical Assistant Diploma (42 credits) Nursing Assistant − Certificate (5 credits) Geriatric Advanced Nursing Assistant − Certificate (16 credits) Overview Nursing Assistant Certificate: This course prepares students to assist dependent elderly persons, home-care clients and hospital patients with their personal care needs. This course combines home health aide con- tent with the nursing assistant course. The Minnesota State Certification examination is administered following course completion. Overview Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, or CAAHEP, on recommenda- tion of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB), the Medical Assistant Program trains students to be professional medical assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates are equipped to assist physicians with examinations and treatments, take medical histories, perform diagnostic tests, expose X-ray films, steril- ize instruments and supplies, assist with minor surgery and administer medications. The program goal is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cogni- tive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Geriatric Advanced Nursing Assistant Certificate: This program will provide the stu- dent with an enhanced understanding of the influence caregivers have in the quality and safety of healthcare for aging adults. The stu- dent will be able to identify common physical and psychosocial characteristics associated with the aging adult. Degree (60 credits) Overview The Patient Care Technician program offers opportunities to individuals interested in entering the health care field and to those currently employed in the field who wish to seek additional credentials to compliment their current skill set.
