Lakeville is home to several industrial parks including Airlake Industrial Park, the second largest in Minnesota. Lakeville offers three award-winning school districts within its boundaries. The largest is District 194, which accounts for two-thirds of the Lakeville area’s student population. All three districts are committed to high-quality education setting the community apart from neighboring cities. Lakeville is delighted with our years of growth and development and celebrates each year with Panorama of Progress, affectionately known to locals as Pan-O- Prog! This week-long summer festival began in 1967 and has grown to over 60 events, tournaments, parades and more! The City of Lakeville experienced a high level of development activity in 2019, with a record-setting annual building permit valuation totaling $301,391,296. The City’s previous highest building permit total was $270,685,655 in 2017. The Metropolitan Council estimated Lakeville’s population to be 64,334 in 2018. This equates to a 15% population increase since 2010. Lakeville ranks #5 for population growth numbers in the Twin Cities behind Minneapolis, St. Paul, Blaine and Woodbury. There were 25 ribbon cuttings for new businesses in 2019 that included commercial retail businesses, restaurants, medical and other office developments, along with churches, a memory care facility and an independent-living market rate apartment project for seniors. Lakeville issued 521 single-family permits in 2019 and this is the seventh year in a row the City has been ranked #1 in residential permit numbers in the Twin Cities. In addition, the City issued 99 townhome permits and 8 apartment project permits. The variety of housing types developed in Lakeville in 2019 is consistent with the Envision Lakeville goal of providing housing choices for “people of all ages and stages of life.” The City Council approved an orderly annexation agreement between Lakeville and Eureka Township to annex the remainder of Airlake Airport property. This annexation was requested by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) to allow the MAC to extend City water and sewer infrastructure to serve the entire airport and new proposed private hangars. The Metropolitan Council approved the City of Lakeville’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan, that guides development for the next 20 years. A corridor mixed use (CMU) zone was added to the updated comprehensive plan allowing for mixed commercial and residential uses near identified transit areas.
