This is especially important for maintenance contractors because our equipment is smaller. Don’ t ask a plate compactor to accomplish what would normally require much heavier equipment. Rent the roller if you have to.
3. Pay Attention to the Edges
The center of the patch usually isn’ t where the trouble starts. It’ s the edges. Poorly compacted joints allow water intrusion and create an opportunity for the repair to begin separating from the surrounding pavement. Once water gets into that joint, freeze-thaw cycles and traffic can quickly accelerate failure. Make deliberate passes along the perimeter of the repair. On hot mix remove-and-replace patches, make sure the new material is properly consolidated against the existing pavement. With infrared repairs, focus on creating a tight transition between the repaired material and the surrounding asphalt. Don’ t judge compaction only by how smooth the patch looks. Temperature, lift thickness and edge compaction are three simple details that can separate a temporary patch from a professional asphalt repair.
For maintenance contractors, that’ s ultimately what the customer is paying for, not just black asphalt in a hole, but a repair designed to last.
