FROM THE SCIENCE TO THE SURFACE:

A NEW RESOURCE FOR PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE PROFESSIONALS

Lee Lowis began his pavement maintenance career at 19, working as a laborer on sealcoating and tennis court surfacing crews, and spent the next 50 years learning the industry from the field to the executive suite. He ultimately served as the president and CEO of GemSeal before retiring from that position in 2024. He continues to work as an industry consultant. The breadth of experience taught Lowis that understanding why a product works can be just as important as knowing how to apply it. His new book, The Science Behind Pavement Maintenance, translates the science behind commonly used materials into practical information for contractors, specifiers, DOT personnel, sales professionals and field crews. Lowis wrote the book to address a gap he observed throughout his career. Manufacturers provide technical information, but that information generally focuses on their own products or systems. Lowis wanted to take a broader approach by explaining the underlying chemistry and science from a manufacturer-neutral perspective.“ The goal was to explain the science in a neutral, educational way,” Lowis says.“ If you understand what is happening with the materials, you can make better decisions about how and when to use them.” The book covers asphalt fundamentals; pavement coatings, crack sealants, the curing process, additives, and the effects of weather and job-site conditions on material performance. It also applies those scientific principles to field practices and explains how greater technical understanding can help prevent common application failures. According to Lowis, several manufacturers and contracting companies are already using the book to train sales professionals, foremen and field crews. Greater product knowledge can help sales professionals explain performance and application requirements with more clarity and credibility. For field personnel, understanding why materials behave as they do can support better application decisions, fewer preventable problems and longer-lasting results.
