PURCHASING PRODUCTS?

T alk about product overload. If you have been reading this magazine, or attending any Asphalt Industry Conferences this Winter, you have seen a mountain of innovations( Robotic Striping Machine or Safety Self-Stopping Roller anyone?). Along with the plethora of tried-and-true products that have built this industry. So, let’ s just say that when it comes to owning an asphalt business, or being the product purchaser for one, you have a lot to consider. I have put together a few, of many, things to consider when it comes to acquiring new products for you company. Now keep in mind, you may NEED a purchase for a specific problem RIGHT NOW, to which these may not apply because you have a“ fire” to put out. However, like I conversated with my friends Chris Tammany and his son recently when looking at a rubber wheel roller, a“ High-Ticket” purchase will likely be for the long term and long-term considerations may be needed. Let’ s go over a few things to think about when buying, below.

Quality and Durability:
Most asphalt equipment is a long-term investment for clients, unless they are“ short-life” tools like shovels, picks, sprayer cans, etc. So, ensuring you buy a high-quality product is crucial. The product should be durable, resistant to weather, wear, and tear, and provide confidence that it is going to perform when / how you need it to. Quality products will reduce the need for frequent repairs and maintenance, boosting your business’ s reputation and helping you avoid costly setbacks( aka downtime).
Cost-effectiveness:
While quality is essential, you also need to stay within budget. When purchasing, compare the price of different brands and suppliers for similar products to ensure you’ re getting a good deal. Consider the long-term savings— sometimes investing in slightly more expensive products up front can save you money on repairs or maintenance over time. Talk to your peers about this, get their input. Often asking a question online, in a group, can get you multiple pieces of feedback that you can consider.
Supplier Reputation and Support:
A reliable supplier with a strong reputation in the asphalt industry can make all the difference. Look for suppliers who offer consistent product availability, good customer service, and technical support if you need it. It’ s also a plus if the supplier provides training or guidance on how to use the equipment effectively and optimize their performance. There are a couple big brand suppliers that actually offer a“ University” or“ Training Grounds” to help you get a feel for the equipment via a“ hands-on” experience. By focusing on these factors, you’ ll be able to build a solid foundation for your asphalt business and ensure smooth operations, by creating a fleet of equipment you can depend on, and have support for if you encounter any issues.
