Maximize Crack Sealing with Cold-Pour Materials
Pavement preservation programs often include crack sealing as a first step in maintaining surface condition for asphalt pavement. On public-facing paved surfaces, material selection should focus on curb appeal, precision and sealcoating compatibility. As a result, cold-pour crack fillers are commonly used on parking lots, driveways, walking paths and other similar paved areas.
While both hot-pour and cold-pour crack fillers are used across the pavement maintenance industry, their applications differ based on pavement type and service conditions. Hot-pour crack fillers are widely used on roads, highways and other high-volume pavements, where wider application bands and fast set times are often acceptable. However, parking lots and driveways require a more refined finished appearance, which influences material and equipment selection.
Cold-pour crack fillers are designed to provide greater precision during application, supporting a narrower crack profile and limiting material from banding beyond the crack edges. Consistent material placement is especially important on parking lots and driveways, where wide banding serves little functional purpose and can detract from curb appeal. Excessive banding can also create challenges when the surface is later sealcoated, as thicker banding may increase the potential for tearing, ripping or tracking. Cold-pour crack fillers are intended to produce a cleaner, more uniform application that blends more consistently with sealcoat and helps maintain the overall appearance of the pavement.
To support consistent cold-pour application, contractors and municipal crews often rely on purpose-built equipment. The Crack Pro 2,500 is designed specifically for applying cold-pour crack sealant. It is mounted on a wheeled cart that holds two 5-gallon pails of material to support jobsite mobility and reduce interruptions for refilling. The system is powered by a gas engine, which includes a compressor, an air diaphragm pump and a filtered suction system. Additional features include a 25- foot delivery hose, swivel-wheel steering, an adjustable application wand and multiple application tips that allow crews to configure the equipment based on crack width and jobsite conditions. Cold-pour crack sealing equipment such as the Crack Pro 2,500 is well-suited for contractors and municipal crews, including townships, counties, cities and villages performing routine pavement maintenance.
Material selection also plays a key role in cold-pour crack sealing performance, particularly on parking lots and driveways where appearance and flexibility are important. TruFlex Rubberized Crack Sealant is a coldpour material designed to provide a clean, uniform finish while remaining flexible through pavement expansion and contraction caused by changing temperatures.
TruFlex is formulated as a highly rubberized, polymermodified, water-based material and can be applied using common cold-pour methods. Its formulation allows application to cracks that are dry or slightly damp, and it may also be combined with sand to create a heavierbodied, mastic-like repair for wider cracks or localized distressed areas. For contractors and municipalities incorporating cold-pour crack filling into routine pavement maintenance programs, TruFlex is designed to offer application convenience, flexibility and durability in a single solution.
