K9 Unit

The K9 Unit provides support for officers in the field searching for dangerous suspects , evidence , and narcotics . The team is led by a sergeant and is made up of four handlers who are each paired with a K9 service dog . They respond to calls in progress that meet the criteria for their assistance .
In 2020 , the unit responded to 55 patrol assists , conducted 17 searches , and made 8 K9 apprehensions .
In addition to responding to calls for service , K9 handlers and dogs typically conduct demonstrations at community events and attend functions across the city , including school visits , community meetings , and festivals . The pandemic greatly impacted the unit ’ s ability to participate in such events in
2020 , as many of those events were canceled or postponed . The team made 3 public appearances and 62 public contacts in 2020 . They ’ re hopeful there will be additional opportunities to engage with the Arlington community in 2021 as more of the city ’ s population is vaccinated .
In November , the City of Arlington unveiled a new K9 Memorial honoring service dogs that assist both the police and fire departments . The Belgian Malinois displayed on the
memorial was inspired by APD K9 Mojo , the department ’ s first service dog to die in the line of duty . The sculpture is located just outside the Arlington City Council Chambers , between City Hall and the George W . Hawkes Downtown Library . The K9 Unit is grateful to the city leaders and private donors who made the memorial possible .
