In 2020 , APD ’ s Research and Development team completed the License Plate Recognition Project , which deployed the Motorola Vigilant solution . This solution included in-car license plate recognition systems with PlateSearch and FaceSearch for Law Enforcement . This Vigilant solution aids the department in finding vehicles with wanted or stolen license plates or related to missing persons .
The team also finished the Unified Video Project to replace all of its in-car camera and interview room systems . The new in-car and interview camera systems are on the same platform as its body-worn cameras , and this aids the department in simplifying the management of its large amount of video evidence .
The R & D Unit replaced , upgraded , and enhanced all of its agency-issued smartphones to FirstNet , a first responder network managed by the First Responder Network Authority , a federal agency . This upgrade improved mobile management and compliance and provided new tools for the department while enhancing cellular service .
In response to the pandemic , the department issued over 200 Microsoft Surface tablets , funded through the Coronavirus Aid , Relief , and Economic Security ( CARES ) Act , to aid in sustaining operations by improving the mobility of the department .
The group continued to support and enhance the many police technology services it provides . Unit personnel is comprised of a manager and six employees . The department deployed new license plate readers in April to assist with recovering stolen vehicles and wanted fugitives . Since the deployment , officers have received 2,535 returns on license plates consisting of 528 sex offender registration returns , 221 stolen vehicles , 129 stolen license plates , 20 wanted fugitives , and 2 missing persons .
