Gun Crimes Unit
The Gang and Gun Crimes Unit was assigned 825 cases in 2020 . Detectives prepared 136 arrest warrants and 93 search warrants based upon probable cause in those cases . In addition , 36 cases were adopted federally through the department ’ s partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms , and Explosives .
The federal partnership seeks to reduce community risks that firearms pose through the detection of illegal firearm use , criminal street gangs , and trafficking of firearms . Task Force Officers work with the ATF to investigate firearms-related violent crime while gathering and reporting intelligence data . In some cases , federal adoption of firearms cases occurs .
The National Integrated Ballistic Identification Network ( NIBIN ) is an automated program that utilizes ballistic imaging technology . The investigative tool can link evidence and firearms to other crimes in our jurisdiction , neighboring jurisdictions , or across the country . Crimes may be solved by sharing intelligence and evidence recovered from one scene that is linked to another .
