Pandemic

In March , The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic . This meant the department had to think of new and innovative ways to continue to safely perform their duties , and still serve the community .
Social distancing , masks , and hand washing became the new normal for everyone , including APD . Exposure and decontamination protocols were put in place for all personnel , vehicles , and equipment . In positions where it was possible , work-from-home was implemented as another safety precaution . Employees and their families dealing with the stress of these new dynamics were provided help through peer support , family wellness guides , and the department chaplain . Officers also saw how the crisis was affecting citizens and their families as well . Due to social distancing , many children were looking at birthdays without parties and friends to celebrate with them . To bridge the gap , officers drove by kids ’ homes on their birthday in squad cars with their emergency lights on , waved , and wished them well .
Additionally , North district officers helped the Boys & Girls Club distribute food to over 200 people in the Arlington community , providing curbside service . The African American Peace Officer Association gave out over 300 hot , ready-to-eat meals for AISD students 18 and younger . Police officers and fire fighters still rolled up their sleeves to donate blood for the community during one of the most prolonged periods of a critical blood shortage in recent history .
The department received a tremendous amount of community support in 2020 . Donated food , cards , and well wishes poured into every station , highlighting the community ’ s kindness and thankfulness for officers and employees .
