Traffic Safety and Crashes Traffic safety is of paramount importance for the department and community. There are a significant amount of resources dedicated to roadway safety and public education. Patrol officers have a responsibility to ensure motorists operate vehicles in a safe manner and in compliance with the law within their geographic beat areas. The department also has a Traffic Unit comprised of several sections: Fatality Crash Investigators; 52 | 2019 Annual Report Commercial Vehicle Enforcement; Motors; Traffic Enforcement Officers; and DWI Enforcement. Operation SAFE (Strategy Against Fatality Events) is a recurring taskforce operation that combines traffic enforcement units with patrol resources to target a specific area that has experienced a high frequency of crashes. Officers look for aggressive drivers and behaviors that can lead to dangerous situations for motorists and road rage incidents. The map on the corresponding page highlights the frequency of crash locations coupled with DWI arrests. The public can assist the department by reporting dangerous drivers through the 9-1-1 call take system. Reports of road rage that are not in progress can be reported by calling 817-459-5389.
