Youth Investments The department offers several opportunities and programs for school age children, teens, and young adults to participate with law enforcement activities. The underlying goal is to build rapport and enhance trust with youth. As young people are Youth Initiatives brought up through the school system, there are several ways to connect and build relationships with officers. Johns Elementary is home to a program entitled C.H.A.M.P.S. – Creating Healthy Academic Mentoring Partnerships. The initiative, Coach 5-0 which began in January, allows officers the opportunity to mentor students at a young age level to ensure they continue with school success. Each week, officers and students meet and work on projects. The department held the first C.H.A.M.P.S. graduation in May. Coach 5-0 continues to be one of the largest programs featuring almost 100 officers and professional staff employees from across the department. Mentors are able to attend sporting events and practices to cheer on student athletes while teaching them role responsibility and what being a police officer is all about.
