Research & Development The Research and Development Unit consists of a manager and six employees. The unit’s primary responsibility is to plan, facilitate, promote, and support technology acquisition and technical services. Additionally, the unit aids department staff in short and long-term planning. Such support is provided through staff studies, statistical analysis, and operational policy planning. In 2018, the department completed the deployment of body- worn cameras. This included the issuance of all equipment and training components that were completed in March of 2018. The digital evidence management system for body-worn cameras allows investigators the ability to review video evidence and enhance case investigation. The camera systems were integrated into an officer’s uniform with 617 systems currently in use. The unit acquired and deployed 235 replacement laptop mobile data computers for marked units. These systems are ruggedized laptops that can withstand the elements and everyday use. This program is on a lease program so that laptops are replaced on a regular interval to stay ahead of cutting-edge computer technology. One of the largest projects last year included the development and testing of a mobile application for the internal workforce.  The mobile app will afford employees the ability to access current CAD data and other resources to assist them with their job functions. It is anticipated that the full version of the mobile app will be rolled out in Spring 2019.
