The Traffic Unit is commanded
by Lt. Jeff Pugh and consists of
officers working in a variety of
capacities including motorcycles,
serious and fatality crash
investigations, searching for
impaired drivers, conducting
freeway enforcement, and
inspecting commercial vehicles to
ensure safety and compliance with
laws. Unit officers made 451 arrests
for DWI and 50 arrests for Public
Intoxication.
Since 2008, DWI Enforcement
Officer Stacie Brown has been
committed to public education
on the dangers of impaired
driving. From teaching students to
Annual Report 2017
providing seminars to adults, the
community outreach component
on intoxicated driving remains a
core strategy for the department.
It is estimated that over 1,000
students in Arlington ISD and
Mansfield ISD have participated
in student presentations. Officer
Brown also presented at a Victim's
Impact Panel for Mothers Against
Drunk Driving.
Commercial Vehicle
Enforcement inspectors conducted
3,365 safety inspections. This
resulted in 572 vehicles being
placed out of service until
repairs could be made to the
commercial vehicles. A total
of 8,336 violations of state and
federal laws were recorded during
2017 involving commercial trucks.
The unit consists of four officers,
four auxiliary officers who have
other traffic duties as well, and a
sergeant.
The Motorcycle Unit consists
of two teams of 8 officers, each
supervised by a sergeant. While
motorcycle officers are primarily
tasked with traffic enforcement,
they also participate in vehicle
escort operations related to
special events. Motorcycle
Officers also work school zone
enforcement, respond to
serious crashes to direct traffic
around crash scenes, and
work in neighborhoods where
speeding complaints are
prevalent. Over 250 escorted
movements were provided
for 35 major events related
to AT&T Stadium, Globe Life
Park and other city venues.
