Spotlight - Technology
The Arlington Police
Department leverages technology
to support operations and
strategic goals. The modern day
officer operates multiple types
of technology to complete daily
duties. From in-car camera systems
to mobile data computers, officers
balance the need of technology
while responding to calls for
service.
Body-worn cameras began
rolling out onto the streets in
the final quarter of the year. The
department launched a body-
worn camera program in an
effort to assist officers in field
responses. Body-worn cameras
have continued to become more
common place in law enforcement
agencies across the country.
Cameras have been issued
to sworn officers from the rank of
lieutenant and below. The camera
systems are securely mounted to
the uniform and can be remotely
activated. After the Arlington City
Council authorized the department
to execute a contract for a vendor,
the project team went through
a complex request for proposal
process and selected Utility, Inc.
for the program.
Body-worn camera systems
are an advanced police
body camera with artificial
intelligence, advanced network
infrastructure, and a complete
evidence ecosystem. In 2017, the
department rolled out 300 of its
617 cameras with the anticipated
completion date of the remainder
systems in early 2018.
