2 2016 Spotlight- 21st Century Policing Initiative
In May 2016, The Department of Justice and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services( COPS) Office launched the Advancing 21 st Century Policing Initiative, which will provide hands-on assessments and technical assistance to a cohort of law enforcement agencies that have already made strides in advancing community policing in their areas. The Arlington Police Department was selected to be one of 15 law enforcement agencies nationwide to serve as an exemplary implementation model for the President’ s Task Force on
21 st Century Policing.
Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams, City Manager Trey Yelverton, Police Chief Will Johnson, and Lt. Tarrick McGuire attended a ceremony at the White House as the announcements were made. The department has assembled a committee led by Lt. Brook Rollins to implement and report how Arlington conducts law enforcement activities outlined in the recommendations in the task force report.
The Arlington Police Department is assigned a strategic site coordinator( SSC), and operations analyst( OA) from the COPS office. The SSC and OA made a site visit in late 2016, and reviewed a multitude of policies, documents, practices, and procedures. Further, interviews with key personnel – from line level to command staff, were conducted. The interim report released by the COPS Office reports the Arlington Police Department is already well-aligned with the President’ s Task Force on 21 st Century Policing. Specific programs such as: Coach 5-0, Mentoring Arlington Youth, and the Arlington Clergy and Police
