COMMUNITY SUPPORT DIVISION 46 T he Community Support Division includes: • Crime Prevention Unit • Victim Services Unit • School Resource Officer Unit • Training Center • Personnel & Recruiting • Community Support Manager • Homeless Outreach Lt. Kelly Velder is assigned as the Commander over Youth Services which provides public safety services to 76 schools. School Resource Officers (SRO) are assigned at each of the high schools and middle schools. Last year, SROs played a major role in educating students as to the serious nature of social media. The department saw a major increase in threats directed toward schools via social media. Two videos were produced for students and parents to bring this issue to the forefront. The SRO Unit also oversees lockdown drills to ensure that public safety plans are ready and functional. Police Explorer Post #602 had 18 students assigned last year and they assisted in several departmental operations throughout the year. From special events, to burglary prevention efforts, to assisting with our police memorial services, explorers are an important segment of the department’s team. The post took several high honors and awards at competitions held around the state. In 2015, the Victim Services Unit led by Derrelyn Perryman provided crisis intervention and follow-up referrals to over 11,000 victims of crime, their families, and ot
