spotlight HolidayCheer be seen waving at motorists and generating a lot of friendly smiles as citizens seek out that special gift. The magic of the holiday season was brighter than ever last year. From Santa sightings, to Santa Cop parties, to holiday traffic direction, everyone at APD got into the holiday spirit. APD participates annually in the Santa Cop program in partnership with the Arlington Police Association to make the season brighter for hundreds of children. In December, Santa Cop parties are held at the Arlington Convention Center. Officers interact with children through dancing and playing games. Families receive toys and gifts through the generosity of the community and sponsors. The culmination event is delivering gifts to families in need on Christmas Eve. The retail district located in South Arlington can get mighty busy during the holiday period. Each year, a traffic management plan is developed to ensure the expedient flow of traffic and safety of shoppers. Officers can On Christmas Eve night, the Media Office posts pictures of Santa sightings from around the city as kids get ready for Santa to arrive. The feedback from the community has been awesome. This past year, we used a “real” Santa to pose with officers out in the field. The holiday in Arlington was merry and bright. The community always rallies behind Arlington’s finest during this time when compassion and generosity become centerpiece to everything else. 21
