The Crime Scene Unit( CSU) is comprised of 12 Crime
CRIME SCENE UNIT
Scene Investigators and two commissioned Sergeants, providing 24 / 7 investigative support across Arlington. The CSU primarily responds to violent crimes, including homicides, suicides, sexual assaults, officer-involved shootings, fatality accidents, and death investigations, as well as property crimes requiring specialized expertise. In 2024, the unit responded to approximately 306 calls for service.
The CSU is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board( ANAB), a prestigious recognition of its forensic proficiency and adherence to the highest standards. The unit specializes in Firearms and Toolmarks, employing three National Integrated Ballistic Information Network( NIBIN) operators. As a NIBIN database entry site, the CSU handles firearms research, schedules test fires with rangemasters, enters ammunition casing data into the database, and maintains evidence and reports for case detectives, management, and ATF review.
In 2024, the CSU received Coverdell and TAG funding to acquire a Cyber National shoot tank and a portable laboratory for on-site test fires. Both CSIs and rangemasters benefit from this advanced facility, which supports the CSU’ s commitment to excellence in forensic investigations and maintaining its ANAB accreditation.
