POWERS , DUTIES , AND FUNCTIONS
The Arlington Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency consisting of sworn officers and professional staff employees . The Chief of Police is directly accountable to the City Manager and directs the operation and administration of the agency . The department is responsible for :
• Preservation of the public peace ;
• Protection of the rights of all persons and property ;
• Prevention of crime ;
• Detection and arrest of offenders ;
• Enforcement of violations of state laws and local ordinances ;
• Building relationships with citizens ;
• Proactive patrols to deter criminal activity ;
• Traffic enforcement and education to reduce crashes . The department covers 99 square miles with a population of 392,304 residents , excluding tourists and commuters . The agency also serves as ambassadors for the city ’ s expansive Entertainment District , which includes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually .
The department is committed to a geographic policing philosophy . For police operations , the city is divided into four patrol districts . Each district is further divided into sectors and beats . Officers and supervisors are assigned to these geographic areas with the expectation that they build positive relationships with residents and businesses .
The department also has several specialized sections and units that support patrol operations .
