ACCREDITATION

The Arlington Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies( CALEA) since 1989. CALEA is the gold standard of accreditation for public safety and the process is part of a continuing quality control method of documentation and evaluation based on self and peer assessment. Its purpose is the improvement of administrative and operational quality to ensure public accountability and national“ best practice” methods are being pursued. Accreditation embodies the precepts of community-oriented policing and creates a forum in which law enforcement agencies and local community members can confront challenges together.
The department maintains the CALEA Tri-Arc Award for having concurrent accreditations for law enforcement, public safety communications, and public safety training. APD is one of the few agencies in the country that is both Tri-Arc certified while being“ accredited with excellence” by the organization. This means the department maintains the highest standards in reviewing policies and procedures to ensure it stays at the forefront with trends and modernization.
The Police Department and Training Center are scheduled for the next on-site CALEA assessment in 2023. Continued successful performance is expected and APD should receive its tenth consecutive award, with the Training Academy receiving its fifth consecutive award at that time.
