Lt . Christopher Cook was selected in July 2020 by the U . S . Department of Justice as one of the only public information officers in the country to testify before the President ’ s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice ’ s Hearing on Community Trust and Respect for Law Enforcement . The Chair of the Commission , Phil Keith , also the Department of Justice COPS Office Director , sent a personal letter of appreciation to the department based upon the informative , compelling , and critical testimony .
Lt . Cook also presented communication strategies to the International Association of Chiefs of Police October 2020 Annual Conference .
The department fielded community questions over the summer of 2020 related to the # 8CANTWAIT campaign which sought to reduce police misconduct during use of force incidents nationally . The agency publicly released its use of force policy as well as a document outlining compliance with the recommendations which originated from Campaign Zero .
The department attended an “ We Are Related ” event over the summer , where Interim Police Chief Jaime Ayala along with executive command staff met with the community outdoors to discuss the civil unrest that was occurring throughout the country . Chief Ayala also explained how Arlington approached public safety and connects with residents to build strong neighborhoods .
