HALL OF FAME
Mark Tschetter
BY ROCKY SUNDLING
Many people don’t know what they want to do until later in life. Mark Tschetter
always knew that he would be a lawyer. He powered through law school and was
admitted to practice law at the age of 24 and would eventually become one of the
top landlord legal experts in the country.
Ironically Mark first became interested in landlord tenant law while in law school
because his mother’s landlord was trying to wrongfully retain her security deposit.
After encountering Mark, this landlord hasn’t retained a security deposit since 1987.
Tom Toomey
BY MIKE ZOELLNER
Tom Toomey is very deserving of this award for many
reasons, but in my mind, the fundamental reason is
consistent leadership to our Industry. Throughout his
career Tom has always been known as an insightful
leader of teams, highly intelligent and he has been at the
forefront of thinking about how our industry is perceived
externally. He has certainly helped to increase the
professionalism of our industry, is a very high integrity
person and he has also delivered extraordinary returns
for his investors.
I met Tom in 1990 when he became the CFO for Lincoln
Property Company and I was a brand-new Partner.
Tom was based in Dallas at the time where he managed
a very complex international network of partnerships on
behalf of our Chairman Mack Pogue. It was during that
time that I realized how much Tom enjoyed cigars and
witnessed firsthand that he is known to have actually
eaten them during difficult meetings.
For countless years, Mark
has generously given his time
and his legal expertise to the
Association by serving on the
Board, the Executive Committee,
JLAC, providing opinions and
insight on proposed legislation,
meeting with state legislators,
and testifying at the Capitol.
Mark has always financially
supported the Association’s
political goals.
Of particular note, in 2007-
2008, the Colorado General
Assembly was going to enact
a warranty of habitability law. Mark gave hundreds of hours of his time serving on
the Governor’s task force and co-authoring the legislation to make sure that the
multifamily industry was protected.
Mark and his talented team of attorneys at THS voluntarily give countless hours of
time to educate the industry. His philosophy is simple: Serve his clients and promote
their interests.
Tom moved to Denver in 1995 when he was recruited
away from Lincoln to join AIMCO as their CFO and later
became their Chief Operating Officer. At AIMCO, he was
instrumental in growing the company into what was the
largest apartment owner (in number of units) in the U.S.;
growing its portfolio ten-fold while he was there.
In 2001, he was recruited away again to become the Chief
Executive Officer and President of UDR, Inc., which today is
a $16B - S&P 500 company.
