NEW TALENT
MAINTENANCE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
23 More Students Graduate from AAMD’s Premier Maintenance Program
T
he Maintenance Apprenticeship
Program (MAP) recently
completed the third session,
which was the most competitive
enrollment yet. The association received
166 applications and conducted 48 in-
person interviews. After screening the
candidates, it was determined that 25
students met the program requirements
and were enrolled in early January.
Students spent the next week six weeks
working on-site with an Industry
Partner and completed 48 hours of in-
class learning through Emily Griffith
Technical College. 23 students successfully
completed the program and graduated on
February 23, 2018.
MAP was created to help fill the
current void of maintenance professionals
and has been designed to train and equip
candidates with the skills necessary for the
growing multifamily industry. Through
three sessions, 67 students have completed
the program and 35 are currently working
the industry. Many students from the
third session are still being placed, so that
number is expected to increase when those
hires are finalized.
The fourth session of MAP is scheduled
to begin on Friday, March 23 and the fifth
and final session will begin Friday, May
18. The goal is to have over 100 students
graduate the program and have more
than half of them actively working in the
industry at the completion of five sessions.
The Apartment Association of Metro
Denver and the Anthony V. Pusateri
Fund, through the National Apartment
Association Education Institute, is
covering a minimum of $70,000 in tuition
assistance to put students through the
program at no cost to them.
Like any new program, there have been
a lot of lessons learned as the sessions were
completed. Based on the feedback from
the Industry Partners, new requirements
have been put in place to make the hiring
of graduates more likely. For example,
students must now start the program
with a basic set of tools and have a valid
Driver’s License. In addition, feedback
from graduates was also gathered and
analyzed and based on that, there is now
a mandatory Industry Partner orientation.
This orientation provides an overview and
expectations as a participating Industry
Partner to both the Community Manager
and Maintenance Supervisor. The changes
that have been implemented throughout
the program have helped improve the
results of each session.
There are two sessions remaining and
properties are still needed to host new
students. If you are interested in learning
more about or participating in MAP,
please contact Lisa Godbehere for more
information. Thank you to the Industry
Partners for your continued support!
