T
he National Apartment
Association’s 2019 Advocate
Conference was held in in
Washington, D.C. this past month.
The annual Advocate Conference
provides an opportunity to learn about
current and active legislative issues
on the federal level. Twelve members
from both the Apartment Association
of Metro Denver and the Colorado
Apartment Association took the
opportunity to attend the conference to
learn more about issues that impact our
industry on the federal level.
Members visited with Colorado’s
congressional delegates to discuss
industry issues such as housing
affordability and the need for
streamlining HUD’s Housing Choice
Voucher program. They highlighted
concerns which centered on the
reauthorization of funding the National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
While flooding continues to be the

most common natural disaster in the
United States, the NFIP is a critical risk
management tool for multifamily housing
to not only protect their properties, but
to maintain affordable coverage and
manage the increasing costs of providing
housing.
The group also met with Senator
Bennet’s policy director to highlight
concerns on evictions. U.S. Senator
Bennet is looking to sponsor a bill that
would address the perceived numerous
evictions in Colorado. We were able
to provide valuable real information
that helped to address this matter. We
continue to provide data on evictions to
the media and to State legislators as they
seek information pertinent to possible
state proposals.
For more information on these
issues or to learn more about current
issues at the State level, please contact
Nancy Burke or Destiny Bossert at the
Association office.
