So as to try to alleviate adhoc judging, a system was derived whereby marks will be awarded in several categories. Therefore judges have categories to work within. So when your favorite steelband, calypsoian or soca artiste (or better I leave that one out) did not make it into the finals ask yourself, are they aware in what categories marks are awarded? I observed in Skinner Park a young lady performing a very good song lyrically, but the music was very basic to say the least, with only brass lines in the band chorus. How could one enter a competition where there are five judges to judge music, five for lyrics and five for performance and you not make an attempt to maximize points in every category?
In my discourse with friends at school and work, I often say the person and or group who will emerge winners will be the ones who understand the judging criteria and appeal to it - well done Roderick “Chucky” Gordon, Phase Two Pan Groove and Kerwin Dubois. So next time the argument starts in the lobby at NAPA, obtain a copy of the rubric the judges work with, compare it to the performances that were presented and then and only then should you feel confident enough to make a sensible informed statement such as, Dey Tief!
