LOOKING AT ROMANTICISM

WHAT IS IT?

Romanticism is an artistic, literary, and intellectual style that began in France and Britian in the early 19th century and ended by the mid-19th centruy.

It emerged as a response to the French Revolution, Industrialization, and the Enlightenment movement.

The Romantic movement favored spiritualism, emotions, and the glorification of nature over scientific rationalism and the aristocratic and political norms of the period.

Caspar David Friedrich, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog

"Romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor in exact truth, but in a way of feeling."

-Charles Baudelaire, 1846
