BREEDING
“Must one be fanatical in order to breed?”
“Yes, absolutely. If you are not fanatical you can’t
breed. Fanaticism leads you to do crazy things;
to try things out; to invest; to dream. Breeding
is something you must enjoy. My bloodstock is
based on Polo played abroad, where I’ve won
a lot. In the United States today I have 3 teams
which are all mounted by my bloodstock, and
in Argentina, although there are many clones,
they also come from my bloodstock. The key is
to open up; I’m always interested in generating
new wombs, so as not to become stuck in one
genetic bloodline. As with Carla; Lucky; Hanna
Montana. This diversity causes the breed to not
remain in only one style.”
“Have you developed a system by which you
can continue to invest in your organization?”
“Yes. One must do so, and in my case, every
year. Fortunately Bob Jornayvaz became
fanatical almost like me, seeking excellence.
We must improve. For this reason we buy an
embryo ‘to be extracted’ from each of the good
mares belonging to good Open players. This
means that we choose one of their mares and
start thinking what stallion we would like to put it
to… and that’s what we did with several players
and went adding good genetics. That began as
a dream.”
“And on what do you base your bloodstock?”
“In my case, always on dams. The maternal
bloodline is, I think, the most important and I can
prove it. A mare like Dolfina Lapa has been put to
10 different stallions and her get have all played.
So I base my theory on that experience. The sire
has to be very bad not to go along with a good
dam.”
