The Genetic Era and Genetic Selection Will Enable Us to:
In the Short Term:
1- Define which the characters are that
increase performance in a polo pony and to
start to measure them systematically. 3- Generate breeding catalogues that make it
possible to select Stallions or mares based on
its improvement objectives.
2- Determine the genetic pattern that
characterizes Polo Argentino horses. 4- Predict certain phenotypic characters
through DNA testing.
3- Determine some of the morphological
characters that a colt will present when it
becomes an adult. 5- Develop an auxiliary tool for a genetic and
improvement selection program for the breed.
4- Establish the existence of individuals that
carry genetic diseases at an early stage. In the Long Term:
In the Medium Term:
1- Determine how much of a “Polo Argentino”
a horse is, through its genetic selection
(including the possibility of creating a
genomic imprinting of the breed).
2- Predict the merit of the individual (how
good a dam or sire it will be) through
genetic selection, as well as predict the
most probable phenotypes that will result
from crossing it with a particular horse, thus
reducing uncertainty.

1- Predict certain characters (of performance;
morphological; behavioral; etc.) in animals,
based on a simple DNA test.
2- Predict the genetic merit of these (how much
improved they are as stallions or mares) using
the same technology.
3- Increase reliability of results obtained in the
improvement plans.
4- Associate certain specific genetic markers to
given traits; predisposal to incurring diseases
or injury; temperament; etc.
