great-grand-dam, she belonged to Barrantes;
Cumbia, which I sold at auction; Lambada and then
Cuartetera. Those are bloodlines that were put to
good stallions, but the bloodline was maintained.”
MG: “And doesn’t that bloodline go right back
to Top Secret? Because Top Secret is Sol;
Luna; Cumbia.”
APH: “Yes, that’s why they went adding sires that
produced good offspring, but the bloodline was
maintained. Marsellesa, on the other hand, which
was a superior mare, was the result of a blood
clash, because her sire, Huahuito, didn’t produce
anything; it was her dam that had the bloodline.
Her dam produced Pimpinela, daughter of Durazo,
which in turn produced Guerrera, but she did
not produce that much. But Nena (great-grand-
dam); Perla (grand-dam) and Pimpinela (dam) of
Marsellesa, were all good Polo-playing ponies.
But she was the result of a blood clash with
Huahuito, a winning stallion, unbeaten until his
fourth race, and Pimpinela bore Marsellesa, which
as a dam never produced anything like what she
was herself. And after that, Huahuito never gave
us anything.”
MG: “And would you advise a breeder to
produce clones?”
APH: “I who have studied genetics all my life, to
find that I am being asked to clone Polo Pureza,
is the highlight of my breeding career. Within the
objectives I set myself, I am satisfied with what
I’ve achieved. Also, that I should have been asked
for Polo Nevadito to be cloned, the winner of the
Ranking during eleven years. The fact that they are
cloning Nevadito; that they should have done so
with Polo Pureza; that I am asked for hair of Polo
Sol Puro… I am very proud of this.”
MG: “Therefore, you consider cloning, in
superior mares or horses, as another factor;
important for any breeder?”
APH: “It means reproducing a superior animal. I
am also passionate about it as a scientific issue,
having studied these things all my life, and seen
how they clone a mare raised by me; having
exercised consanguinity and that they should
clone that, after carrying out cruel selection,
achieving all that…”
