MG: “You always quote Saint Exupery:
‘What is essential is invisible to the eye’.
What, to you, is essential in a horse?”
APH: “Its genetics; the genes. And there are
also qualities in a horse that you may only
discover if you have the sensitiveness to
discover them: their sensitivity; the horse’s
aptitude. You may measure many things:
height, weight and even the speed of a
horse. But there are things that are hidden
and which despite this, are passed on.”
MG: “Here at the Association we take
into consideration both type and
aptitude, but are you only interested in
aptitude?”
APH: “Yes, exactly.”
MG: “You don’t care about type at all?”
APH: “Well, that’s what we founded the
AACCP (Argentine Association of Polo
Pony Breeders) for. The generation before
ours sought polo-type horses. But in fact,
it is aptitude that constitutes type.
There were other organizations and other
selection methods, but our generation—by
which I mean from Juan Carlitos Harriott
down—cared about having a horse that
