“ When I decided to start collecting vintage , I wanted one of each character . Then after I had each character , I decided , now I want every variant of the loose characters . Once I got to every variant that I could possibly think of , I went on to package stuff . I did the same kind of thing , I started off collecting one of each character on each header card , so Star Wars , [ The Empire Strikes Back ], [ Return of the Jedi ],” Jacob said in an interview with Hake ’ s Auctions . He continued by describing how he started collecting one of each character on each front card , then one of every offer on the front , then every back offer .
His Star Wars collection is anchored by some of the most desirable rare pieces and complete or nearly complete sets . Jacob owns all three of the Luke Skywalker , Darth Vader , and Obi-Wan ( Ben ) Kenobi action figures with the double telescoping lightsaber . The “ double telescoping ” term describes the initially short-lived lightsaber design that slides out of the figure ’ s arm and has a smaller tip that extends out from within the lightsaber . Not many carded double telescoping figures remain , because Kenner switched the lightsabers to one solid piece early in the process , suggesting that few were made and even fewer were put on the card .
Jacob collected a complete set of Revenge of the Jedi proof cards . These printing production samples were made to finalize the card designs that would provide backing to the action figures . Because of that , only a small number have survived , and cards with the Revenge of the Jedi title are among the most popular . Though the Revenge title wasn ’ t used for the third movie , the proofs were printed , along with other packaging and posters . After the title was changed and all merchandise depicted the Return of the Jedi title , those cards became the closest collectors can get to Revenge of the Jedi action figures .
