3 Nutritional Tips
for the Holidays
By Katherine Parent
And now we welcome
the new year,
Hydrate, eat regularly and watch the sugar!
With the holiday season upon us and the frantic pace we
all lead it’s no wonder that healthy eating may take a back
seat to the festivities. Fortunately, there is a way to have
a festive time without compromising your health and it
doesn’t involve deprivation! Here are 3 Nutritional Holiday Tips to get you through to the New Year:
full of things
that have never been.
1. Hydrate – Water dissolves so many toxins and keeps
you hydrated. Your lips, skin, hair and digestive system
will thank you. Isn’t it better to have skin that glows this
holiday season rather than looking dried, leathery and
lacking vibrancy? Water keeps everything moving along
smoothly and ensures that you can remove wastes effi-Rainer Maria Rilke
ciently all the while keeping your joints well lubricated.
Please try to get those 8 glasses of water in a day and if you
do decide to indulge in an alcohol beverage or caffeine for
that matter, back it up with 2 glasses of water.
2. Eat regularly – When I say eating regularly I am trusting that those 3 meals and 2 snacks a day incorporate
some great complex carbs, good proteins, and amazing essential fatty acids. Yes, you will find all kinds of rich foods
at this time of year but fill up on the great choices that are
available and indulge in the sweets and the not so great
20% of the time. Make the other 80% rich with vegetables
of many colours, fruit, beans, legumes, lean protein, and
good fats.
3. Watch the sugar – The average Canadian is consuming 27.5 teaspoons of sugar per day. Women should be
consuming no more than 6 tsp. and men 9 tsp. per day.
Remember, too much sugar can pose a list of health risks
one of which is immune suppressant. For every teaspoon
of sugar you consume not only does your body get depleted of an essential mineral called Chromium but the sugar
depresses your immune system by up to 8 hours.
Enjoy the holidays, the wonderful gathering of friends,
family and food. Make Good Choices and get through to
the New Year with a healthy, happy glow.
