STAFF HONOURS VICE-CHANCELLOR'S DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AWARDS 2018 VICE-CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 2018 Dr Joseph N. Goh, Vizla Kumaresan and Associate Professor Sharon A. Bong Dr Joel Moore School of Arts and Social Sciences This academic team designed and implemented a Continuing Education Excellence Development module called ‘Understanding Gender Inclusivity in Malaysia’ to raise awareness among university staff regarding gender and sexuality issues in Malaysia, and to ensure the dignity and safety of diverse staff and students. Dr Babak Salamatinia School of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Joel Moore’s scalable active learning experiences for students, as embodied in his two practice-based learning units ‘A World in Crisis’ and ‘Task Force’, have demonstrated the ability to help students become more enterprising and develop workplace-relevant skills. Dr Moore also developed technologies to improve the scalability of dynamic, student-led learning approaches and practices. He has shared his approaches widely through campus talks, education forums, conference presentations, publications and disciplinary blogs. School of Engineering As the founder of the Engineers without Borders Chapter in Monash University Malaysia (EWB-MUM), Dr Babak Salamatinia has supervised engineering students to complete several community engagement projects including the installation of a micro-hydro generator in a Sarawakian village, working on a Positive Living Community residence for people living with HIV, running biannual educational workshops for refugees and orphans, and a workshop for the non-governmental organisation GoodKids to assist children in constructing musical instruments from waste material. EWB-MUM has been one of the most successful student societies in Monash, accommodating more than 400 members actively involved in several community engagement projects. Associate Professor Amudha Kadirvelu, Associate Professor Sivalal Sadasivan, Dr Chooi Yeng Lee and Benny Efendie Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences and School of Pharmacy This team, along with academic and professional staff from Monash University Australia and Malaysia, won the Vice- Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in a Priority Area. Their project entitled 'Action on Asthma: Delivering Interprofessional Learning at Scale' consisted of a learning activity for all second-year pharmacy and medical students, designed to reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined in the Monash Collaborative Care Curriculum Framework. Aye Chan Lwin School of Business As a trained engineer and project management professional, MBA student Aye Chan Lwin initiated and drove a ‘Train the Trainer’ project management program to support capacity building and skills development for Community Project Leaders in rural Myanmar. With the support of World Health Organization funding, and under the auspices of the Myanmar government’s Department of Rural Development, Aye Chan runs two-day project management training courses, aimed at supporting effective design and implementation. Trainees share their learning with community leaders, who in turn apply their knowledge to important village projects in rural Myanmar including roads, bridges and water reticulation. VICE-CHANCELLOR'S EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AWARDS 2018 Dr Jasmine Hue Seow Mun School of Science Dr Jasmine Hue Seow Mun received the Vice-Chancellor Education Award for Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning at a ceremony held at the Clayton campus. Her work in incorporating technologies and games into teaching for a better learning experience contributed to active learning and innovative teaching methods. 44
