An introduction to
e-learning at Monash
TEACHING AND LEARNING
This workshop was held to complement
classroom-based instruction and foster
student interaction by exploring
Monash's online learning platform.
Participants learnt how to set up a test
environment, disseminate course
information, create forums, assess
student progress, and more.
Showcasing educational
technologies
Enhancing teaching practices
The Continuing Education Excellence Development (CEED) Framework was developed to
provide ongoing learning and development programs for our teaching staff. Two
homegrown CEED modules were launched this year: 'Understanding Gender Inclusivity'
and 'Embed Research Skills to Invigorate Curricula'. The Education Excellence unit
continued 'The Foundations for Effective Teaching' module in 2018, running the
comprehensive 10-week program for new Monash academics at the Sunway campus
and the Clinical School Johor Bahru.
The 'Putting the Magic into Learning'
competition for both staff and students was
organised by Education Excellence, in its first
collaboration with Student Services. The
competition aimed at identifying, showcasing
and recognising promising educational
technologies used to benefit the learning and
teaching environment at Monash.
The list of winners are:
> Dr Karen Golden (Pro Vice-Chancellor Prize)
> Associate Professor Arkendu Sen
(Highly Commended)
> Dr Hue Seow Mun (Runner-up)
> Dr Shaun Lee (Consolation Prize)
> Dr Amreeta Dhanoa (Consolation Prize)
Introduction to learning transformation
The workshop, facilitated by Rosie Mackay, Manager of Strategic Learning
Transformation at Monash University's Office of Learning and Teaching, introduced
attendees to different types (or modalities) of learning: blended, face to face, active and
flipped classroom. She spoke on how to transform teaching and learning using the
approach developed by the Learning Transformation team.
Tracking student
progress A successful
eAssessment run
The learning analytics and reporting
found in Monash's online learning
platform offers valuable insights into
student progress. Educators are able to
access trends in participation,
submissions and other data, which will
assist them in improving the e-learning
experience. A special session was held
to introduce the analytics tool to our
teaching staff and to show them how
student data can be collected and used
for various educational data analyses. Education Excellence piloted the
eAssessment for the first time at
Monash University Malaysia using
computer labs from the School of
Engineering. The team, led by
Associate Professor Arkendu Sen and
Eric Tan, ensured the exam was
successfully concluded with no issues
reported during the two-hour period.
A pioneering separator system,
unique to Monash, was trialled during
the exam.
An app for active learning
in classrooms
This workshop conducted by Ian
Larson, Director of Learning and
Teaching at the Faculty of Pharmacy
and Pharmaceutical Sciences, guided
participants on how to use Poll
Everywhere in engaging ways. The
beginner's level workshop focussed on
the basics and introduced ways in
which Poll Everywhere integrates with
Monash's online learning platform.
