Graduate Medical Education Committee Accreditation The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) is a standing committee within Graduate Medical Education and has responsibility of providing oversight to all aspects of the residency programs at Mount Carmel. To ensure compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements, the GMEC monitors Graduate Medical Education policies, resident supervision, duty hours, and resident status, including selection, promotion, discipline, program accreditation, program changes, internal reviews, and institutional accreditation. The GMEC takes input from the residents seriously by having peer-selected residents participate on the committee and critically reviewing the annual ACGME resident surveys. The committee meets monthly. All of the residency programs are fully accredited by the ACGME and are in good standing with the accrediting body. Quality and Safety To involve residents and faculty in Mount Carmel’s quality and safety initiatives while preparing them to become independent advocates of quality and safety after residency. As the ACGME strives to improve health care in the United States through assessment and advancement of the quality of the programs it accredits, it has developed the Next Accreditation System (NAS). The NAS is an outcomes-based system that measures the resident’s competency in six core areas: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication. Mount Carmel continues to prepare for this advancement in accreditation by continuously monitoring educational outcomes and enhancing the educational environment. Resident Responsibilities Our residents’ responsibilities are based on their level in the training program, patient safety, resident education, and the severity and complexity of the patient. All residents must demonstrate professional attributes and an adherence to ethical principles. Compliance with Duty-Hour Standards The residency programs at Mount Carmel are committed to patient safety and resident well-being. This is supported by a strict adherence to the ACGME duty-hour rules, which include maximum hours per week, mandatory time off, maximum duty length, minimum length of time off between shifts, maximum frequency of in-house night float, maximum in-house on-call frequency and at-home call. Duty hours are continuously monitored and compliance overseen by the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC). Research Ensures resources and processes to provide an environment of scholarly inquiry. 13 14
