Annual Report FY 2018 | Page 4

As we strive to “ be a model of environmental stewardship ,” we have implemented strategies to reduce vehicle emissions and noise pollution , utilize cleaner and more efficient energy sources , and enhance the sustainability of our grounds maintenance procedures . And we have incorporated a staff-driven “ working group ” model for sustainability to create a healthier environment for our employees and visitors and for the wildlife seeking shelter within our 175 acres .
It is impossible to include all that has been accomplished in the past year in this report , but we hope that the highlights on the following pages provide a good sense of the wide range of activities that make up a year at Mount Auburn Cemetery , beginning with the two largest and most visible projects – the renovation of Bigelow Chapel and the rejuvenation of Asa Gray Garden . These two projects have been in the planning stages for several years and are the latest in our multi-year phased efforts to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the Front Entrance area . While significant progress was made during FY2018 , both projects will be completed during FY2019 .
As indicated in the Treasurer ’ s Report ( p . 13 ), Mount Auburn is in excellent financial condition and positioned well to carry out our exciting vision . Our business model commits to blending operating revenue from endowment , earned income , and fundraising under disciplined financial management . Since our founding , we have directed a major share of our lot sales revenue to building the endowment , and we continue to do so . Endowment funds are largely restricted to meet our perpetual care obligations . Fundraising , through the Friends of Mount Auburn , supports visitor services , education , and a wide range of special projects related to horticulture , wildlife habitat , preservation , and historical collections . We believe that this strong , balanced approach – endowment , earned income , and strategic philanthropic investment – is a model for financial sustainability and supporting innovation .
A complete financial statement for the Friends of Mount Auburn can be found on page 16 . A list of those who made gifts to the Friends during the Fiscal Year begins on page 26 . Their support has made possible many of the projects outlined in this report .
We are proud of our great team of dedicated staff , Trustees , volunteers , and supporters who make Mount Auburn such a special place , and we greatly appreciate all the families we serve and all the individuals and organizations who embrace and support our mission and vision .
We respectfully submit this report and encourage you to visit the Cemetery frequently .
