The landscape surrounding Mount Auburn’s
Egyptian Revival Gatehouse was updated
in Summer 2017 as part of the Cemetery’s
initiative to revitalize its entire Entry Precinct.
The new plantings around the Gatehouse
mimic those installed at the Administration
Building in the previous fiscal year and create
an improved sense of welcome.
Eight of the monuments repaired this fiscal year, including
the monument to World War I veteran Walter York
(above), were funded by the Massachusetts State Historic
Records Advisory Board’s Preservation Grants for Veterans
Collections fund and matched by individual donations.
In May 2017, Curator of Historical
Collections Meg L. Winslow was awarded
the 2017 Historical Resources
Preservation Award from the
Watertown Historical Commission for
Harold Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust
awarded the Friends of Mount Auburn a grant
of $250,000 grant for the Pierce Fountain at
Asa Gray Garden.
