KIDNEY PANCREAS TRANSPLANT 1-YEAR KIDNEY GRAFT SURVIVAL , UAB VERSUS EXPECTED
OVERVIEW
For over 30 years , the UAB Pancreas Transplant Program has devoted itself to caring for patients with serious complications related to insulin-dependent diabetes . In a state with disproportionate numbers of people with diabetes , UAB is committed to staying ahead of the curve to better serve the health of our population , so we will evaluate potential transplant candidates with type 2 diabetes who are insulin-dependent in addition to people with type 1 .
Our program has performed nearly 400 kidney / pancreas and pancreas-only transplants . One thing that sets the UAB Pancreas Transplant Program apart is our willingness to perform pancreas after kidney ( PAK ) and simultaneous pancreas and kidney ( SPK ) transplants in suitable patients . We also perform pancreas transplant alone ( PTA ) procedures for patients whose glucose levels are not controlled with insulin pumps and other modalities . PAK and PTA procedures can be problematic , as issues with the patient ’ s kidneys often do not manifest until after the donor pancreas is transplanted .
