LOOKING AHEAD

The years ahead represent one of the most significant periods of change for the railway in a generation. As the industry prepares for the introduction of Great British Railways, there is a renewed focus on creating a more integrated railway that brings track and train together to deliver better outcomes for passengers, freight customers and the wider economy. For CIRO, this reinforces a philosophy that has always been central to our work: developing professionals who understand the railway as a connected system and who can collaborate across organisational and operational boundaries.
In February 2026, CIRO was proud for the first time to host the George Bradshaw Address, where Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander set out her vision for Great British Railways. It reflected the important role that professional development, collaboration and leadership will play in supporting the industry’ s future, and highlighted the growing recognition of CIRO as a trusted professional body that develops the capability the railway needs.
Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in learning that reflects the evolving needs of the industry. This includes further developing our academic offer with the launch of our first undergraduate intake with our new partner Keele University, enhancing the Integrated Railway Operations Leadership Scheme( IROLS), launching the first cohort on the new Level 6 Railway Operations Manager apprenticeship, and continuing to strengthen our existing learning programmes, qualifications and professional development pathways to ensure they remain relevant, accessible and aligned with the needs of employers and rail professionals.
We also remain committed to enhancing the experience of our members. Investment in a new membership platform will provide improved digital services, making it easier for members to engage with CIRO, access learning, manage their professional development and connect with colleagues across the industry. Alongside this, we will continue to expand our programme of events, strengthen relationships with employers and partners, and create new opportunities for collaboration across the railway.
As we look beyond our Silver Jubilee year, our focus remains clear. CIRO will continue to lead, inspire and accelerate the growth of rail professionals, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills and professional recognition needed to support a safe, high-performing and increasingly integrated railway. By remaining true to our purpose and continuing to evolve alongside the industry, CIRO is well placed to support the next chapter of railway operations for many years to come.
